Hair Transplant Surgery- for Men

Hair transplantation has been continually refined over the last 50 years and Australia has a proud record as a leader in developing and refining advances in this field.

Hair transplantation has a justified reputation as being very safe. We are very confident of the skill and experience of our hair transplant team with our leading-edge techniques. Hair transplantation does not achieve our original hair density, but generally provides good to excellent coverage.

The procedure

Lifelong hair follicles are found in good supply in virtually all men at the back of the head in a horseshoe shape. Under a local anesthetic our surgeon will take a thin strip of hair from this area ('donor area'). The hair follicles are then dissected and the non-hair bearing tissue is removed. Hair follicles naturally grow in groups of one to three individual hairs, and so the grafts are dissected as they occur - in one, two and three follicle groups. Once transplanted this will ensure a very natural looking hairline.

Each follicle, or 'graft' is then skillfully relocated to the thinning or balding area at the front or on top of the head ('recipient area'). The grafts are transplanted into their new position at an angle which mimics the client's own hairline.

The recipient area heals in just a few days with no scarring. The new hair starts to grow in approximately three to four months.

Hair transplantation is the only proven, permanent solution to restore naturally growing hair. The transplanted hair retains its colour, curl and texture and will require regular cutting and styling. Your own hairdresser won't know the difference.  Transplanted hair looks natural wet or dry, can be styled the way you like and is yours to enjoy for a lifetime.

What can be done to correct punch grafts?

If you received a hair transplant some time ago, it is quite likely that the technique used involved implanting a graft of 20-30 hairs.  As the hair around these grafts falls out it leaves the grafts in place which leads to the “tufted or brush like” effect.

Using the latest micro-transplant techniques, our hair transplant team can correct this procedure resulting in a natural hair line.  The original grafts are re-used and transferred in micro or mini-grafts of 1 to 3 roots per graft.  Additional grafts can be taken from the side or back of the scalp if necessary.  This can lead to a dramatic improvement in the appearance.

Hair Transplant Surgery - for Women

In the last decade, hair transplanting techniques have advanced and our understanding of female pattern hair loss has evolved. Women previously thought to be ineligible for surgery can now benefit greatly from this procedure. Although not all women with female pattern hair loss are candidates, most can be helped with this procedure. It is now an available and successful option for women.

Hair loss in women is a common occurrence, 40% of the female population suffer from it. Many women have a thinning hair problem in their 20's and 30's that continues into their menopausal years. This can cause severe psychological and psychosocial distress.

Hereditary hair thinning accounts for most cases of hair loss. This is usually triggered by a combination of hormonal activity and genetics, which cause the hair follicles in the scalp to shrink. This condition is called androgenetic alopecia and can start in the teens, 20's, 30's or 40's. Over time, this leads to a shortening of the hair's growth cycle until there is little hair growth at all.

There are other causes of hair thinning and loss that include certain medications and medical conditions, as well as emotional and physical stress. Women who are experiencing hair loss should undergo medical investigation through our Trichology services - a full assessment will determine that the hair loss is not temporary before considering surgical hair transplantation.

Similar to men, potential female candidates must have a good long-term potential donor-recipient ratio and have realistic expectations and goals.

The procedure

Under a local anaesthetic our surgeon will take a thin strip of hair from this area ('donor area'). The hair follicles are then dissected and the non-hair bearing tissue is removed. Hair follicles naturally grow in groups of one to three individual hairs, and so the grafts are dissected as they occur - in one, two and three follicle groups.

Each follicle, or 'graft' is then skilfully relocated to the thinning or balding area of the head ('recipient area'). The grafts are transplanted into their new position at an angle which mimics the client's own hairline. The recipient area heals in just a few days with no scarring. The new hair starts to grow in approximately three to four months.

Eyebrow & Facial Hair Transplant Surgery

Did you know that it's possible to restore eyebrows and patchy beards/facial hair? Eyebrow and facial hair transplantation is the same process used for hair transplantation to the scalp, and can provide successful results to restore eyebrows, camouflage scars or fill out patchy eyebrows or beards.

Eyebrow hair loss can occur for several reasons, and is most commonly associated with:

  • Genetics;
  • Excessive plucking;
  • Scarring (eg. from an accident);
  • Trichotillomania (an obsessive compulsive disorder of plucking the eyebrows);
  • Medical or surgical treatments.

This is a day procedure done at our surgical rooms under a local anaesthetic. Complications are usually limited to minor discomfort and occasional swelling.

For this procedure, a very small strip of hair-bearing skin is removed from a donor area on the scalp. Individual grafts are created from this strip. Individual incisions are then made where the individual grafts are meticulously placed at the correct angle. This provides a very natural appearance.

The newly transplanted hair will heal over the following week and will start to grow in their new position in approximately 3 to 4 months. For eyebrows, occasional trimming is required, and in some cases hair may need to be trained with gel.
